Berks Technologies Opens Applications for UK Bespoke and Legacy Software Development Training

SLOUGH, England – 16th August 2026 – Berks Technologies today opened applications for a company-funded, 12-week software development programme beginning September 28, 2026, for people entering the field or updating existing technical skills.

The initial cohort will provide 24 places and combine live online instruction with six Saturday workshops in Slough. Applications close on September 11, 2026, and the programme concludes on December 18, 2026.

Programme Details

  • Format: Two live online evening sessions each week and six in-person workshops in Slough
  • Duration: 12 weeks, requiring approximately 10 hours each week
  • Capacity: 24 participants
  • Eligibility: UK residents aged 18 or older who can attend the Slough workshops
  • Prior experience: No degree or professional programming background required
  • Participation fee: None; the initial cohort is funded by Berks Technologies
  • Application: Submit a short statement and availability details through the programme information and application page by September 11, 2026

Applications will be reviewed for readiness to complete the weekly commitment and interest in software development. Berks Technologies will notify applicants of decisions by September 18, 2026.

“The programme is intended to give participants repeated experience of planning, writing, testing and improving working software—not simply watching demonstrations,” said the programme lead at Berks Technologies. “Its focus reflects the practical skills our teams use when creating tailored systems and maintaining applications that businesses continue to depend on.”

Practical Curriculum

The curriculum is organised around Bespoke Software Development and legacy software development in the UK. The latter also appears in programme listings under the curriculum label Legacy Software Development UK.

Participants will complete guided work in four areas:

  • Programming fundamentals, including variables, conditions, loops, functions, classes and memory concepts
  • Python scripting, automation and data handling, alongside JavaScript for interactive web interfaces
  • Version control, debugging, code review and incremental project delivery
  • Maintenance of existing applications, including compatibility analysis, staged refactoring and integration with newer components

Project work will progress from calculators, quizzes and task lists to a multi-component web application. Exercises will also address arrays, linked lists, stacks, queues, trees, algorithms and object-oriented design.

Berks Technologies employees with client-facing development and maintenance experience will lead instruction and project reviews. Participants will use version control to maintain reproducible project histories and will prepare portfolio entries explaining their design choices, testing approach and completed code.

Employer Relevance and Outcomes

Curriculum planning references the duties described in the Skills England Software Developer occupational standard. The programme is independently operated by Berks Technologies and is not an accredited qualification.

Berks Technologies will measure:

  • Attendance and programme completion
  • Completion of at least three portfolio projects
  • Results from practical coding and debugging assessments
  • Participant feedback at the end of the programme
  • Reported interviews, further training and employment progression three months after completion

Aggregate results from the initial cohort are scheduled for publication in January 2027. Participation does not guarantee employment, an interview or a role with Berks Technologies or another employer.
