New fees averaging 20% above the 2026 schedule.
MIAMI, FL – 3rd September 2026 – Simplex Group is helping motor carriers, owner-operators and other transportation businesses prepare for the 2027 Unified Carrier Registration renewal cycle. The National Registration System opens this fall, and covered entities must register and pay before Jan 1, 2027 to remain legally authorized under UCR and reduce exposure to state enforcement.
The 2027 cycle brings a meaningful cost change. FMCSA’s final rule adopts an average 20% increase over the fee structure used for 2025 and 2026. Because the amount owed depends on fleet size, carriers should confirm the vehicle count used for registration and resolve any mismatch in their USDOT record before filing.
Who must file
UCR applies annually to for-hire, private and exempt motor carriers, as well as brokers, freight forwarders and leasing companies operating in interstate or international commerce. Canada- and Mexico-based carriers operating in the United States are also subject to the program. Operations that are strictly intrastate and do not handle interstate or international freight generally are not subject to UCR. Private motor carriers of passengers also fall outside the program’s scope.
A UCR credential does not need to be carried in the truck. Compliance can be checked electronically by enforcement personnel, and failure to pay UCR fees may be documented on a Driver/Vehicle Examination Report under the 392.2 UCR violation code.
